FAQ - CiNii Articles

Please follow the procedures below to check your ID:

  1. Go to the Login page from the CiNii Articles page and click "Forgot your CiNii User ID?".
  2. Enter your registered e-mail address and Nam
  3. Click "Search User ID".

Your ID will be sent to your registered e-mail address.

Please follow the procedures below to issue a temporary password:

  1. Go to the Login page from the CiNii Articles page and click "Forgot your password?".
  2. Enter your user ID and the registered e-mail address.
  3. Click "Issue a temporary password".

A temporary password will be sent to your registered e-mail address. Please note that the password is only valid for 24 hours.

CiNii can be used as soon as the registration is completed.
Upon completing registration you will receive a confirmation e-mail from the National Informatics Institute. If you do not receive an e-mail it is likely that registration is not complete. If so, please send an e-mail to user-request@nii.ac.jp from your registered e-mail address, stating your name.
* However, concerning the option setting (ELS academic society participation application), it may take some time for NII confirmation.

ID can be applied for by a librarian who searches and obtains content on behalf of a user in the library.

・When applying for an "Individual ID" :
Please enter your name in the "Name" field, then your library's name in the "Faculty/Department" field.

* Note: When a librarian provides users with CiNii content, it should be done in accordance with Terms of Use.

Some features on CiNii can be used without registration.

The following services are available in CiNii Articles (basic service):

  • Article search
  • Abridged article information display
  • Article detailed information display (some journals' abstracts and works cited information may not be accessed)
  • Support for obtaining full text documents (links to periodical holding information, etc.)

If you are affiliated with an Institutional authentication, you are able to use without registration, the following in addition to the basic service:

  • Article detailed information display (abstracts, works cited, periodicals holding information, etc.)
  • Links to Webcat Plus that provides periodicals holding information

If you have an Individual ID, you are able to use following service in addition to the basic service:

  • Article detailed information display (abstracts, works cited, periodicals holding information, etc.)
  • Links to Webcat Plus that provides periodicals holding information

CiNii does not provide the full text of papers If there are no "CiNii Fulltext Link" icons in search results or detailed information pages.
Since NII does not offer any photocopy or delivery services, users should try the following methods:

(1) If you are affiliated with a university, etc.:

Please consult a librarian at your university's library.
Libraries usually have ILL (Inter-Library Loan) service.

(2) If you are not affiliated with any institutions:     

  1. In the case that the search result displays "Databases: NDL":
    There is a [NDL-OPAC] link button on the Article details page. If you are registered as a user of National Diet Library (NDL), you can request for the photo duplication from its linked page. Please ask about the details and how to become a member to NDL directly.

  2. When "CiNii books" icon appears on the search result page:
    CiNii Books leads to the detailed information of the libraries that hold the journal in question.
    Please click "CiNii books" icon to view the journal information.
    You can see the list of university libraries in "university library holdings" on the middle of a screen.
    Clicking a library name enables you to check details about use of the library. Also, clicking on the "OPAC" button next to a library name will take you to OPAC of the library.

    *Please note that to find the journal you need the following:

    ○Please confirm on Webcat Plus that the library has the volume and issue you need.

    ○Please contact the library by phone or email before visiting.
    In some cases the journal may not be available or the library may require prior notice before a visit.

A user can change his or her own postal address, name, phone number, email address etc. by logging into CiNii and changing the data on the "Change user data" dialog box under "Setting" on the CiNii front page.

Log into CiNii and apply for termination from "Usage Termination Application" under "Setting".

NII has started to provide statistics in accordance with COUNTER guidelines since April 2006.

The Institutional Login is the system that allows authorization between an university and providers so the members of the university can use several provider services with single sign-on. The ID should be supplied by the university.
In Japan, "GakuNin" is the federation for universities (academic institutions) and providers.
It constructs a framework of the Shibboleth authentication.
GakuNin accept an entry from universities, please see [GakuNin] page for more details. From abroad, users of UK Federation also can use Institutional Login.

Go to the "Institutional authentication" page.

Institutional authentication:

A certain amount of time is required for system registration and connection testing. Please ensure your application form arrives at NII no later than the 20th of the month before the month you wish to start the service. If this is delayed, please contact user-request@nii.ac.jp

From the e-mail address registered as the administrator, send a change request to user-request@nii.ac.jp, including the name of your institution.
Please note that we cannot accept requests from anyone other than the registered administrator. Should the administrator change, please see How can we change the registered information for our Institutional authentication? for more information.

(1) Login into the Administrator login Page with the administrator ID.
(2) Choose "Change institution data"
(3) View of "Change institution data"
Note that "Category", "Name", "Number of Full-Time Teaching Staff/Researchers" and "IP Address" cannot be edited here.
To change those information, the administrator should contact us [user-request@nii.ac.jp] directly from the registered e-mail address.

*The administrator ID is not the same as the CiNii Individual ID.
*The administrator ID was sent to the administrator by email when the Institutional authentication was received.
*If you forget your administrator ID or password, email us [user-request@nii.ac.jp] from the registered email address.

The contract may be renewed on the internet at the end of the Japanese fiscal year (February-March).

Institutional authentication renewal procedures

Please note that service for the next fiscal year will be automatically terminated unless you renew the contract.

The contract may be terminated on the internet.

Walk-in users, in public libraries for example, can use CiNii within an institutional authentication.

Yes, a librarian can perform searches on behalf of a user at a library counter as part of the library’s reference services.
Also, the librarian may provide the user with access to CiNii full text contents. In that case, the library may collect a surcharge from the user.

*Note: When a librarian provides users with CiNii content, it should be done in accordance with the regulations.

The Institution which has contract of CiNii Institutional authentication can set the Shibboleth authentication. Please see below how to setting.
(Now CiNii is accepting only users of GakuNin (Japan) and UK Federation. Please ask service desk if you want to use institutional login from other federations.)

(1) Log into Administrator login
(2) Click "Change Institution Data"
(3) Select "Yes" at the [Shibboleth authentication] section
(4) E-mail confirming approval setting is sent
(5) Setting has been completed

If "jao", "jaou", "o" and "ou" field of Shibboleth Authentication IdP is different from the institution's name registered for Institutional authentication, adding alias settings linkage to your Shibboleth authentication is necessarily. Please continue the procedure below.

(1) Log into Administrator login
(2) Click "Additional setting of Shibboleth"
(3) Enter the jao, jaou etc. at the additional setting column. Then click "Next" and "OK".
(4) Changes completed.

Of the information provided by CiNii, bibliographic information held by NII-ELS can be imported by BibTex and Endnote. Data other than NII-ELS is not compatible with bibliographic management software.

Yes. CiNii is able to be linked to other websites and systems using OpenURL as follows:

(1) Institutions with fixed-price contracts are able to set links between their OPAC, systems such as link resolvers (a system that links article information in a database to library OPACs or full text resources) and CiNii Articles by using OpenURL.
CiNii is compatible with OpenURL 1.0 and 0.1.
*Note: Only the administrators of the institutions with fixed-price contracts are able to set such links.

(2) Describing a link in the OpenURL format enables links between each record on CiNii to link resolvers, etc.

Users can set links between CiNii and their OPACs by using ISSN.

*This function is for only for institutions with fixed-price contracts. Administrators can set it from the settings page for institutions.

Libraries connected to the online cataloging system (NACSIS-CAT) are able to set and display a link to their OPACs on CiNii Books by adding the data to information on connected library of NACSIS-CAT database, if their OPAC can receive NCID as a parameter.
