FAQ - CiNii Articles

Please follow the procedures below to check your ID:

  1. Go to the Login page from the CiNii Articles page and click "Forgot your CiNii User ID?".
  2. Enter your registered e-mail address and Nam
  3. Click "Search User ID".

Your ID will be sent to your registered e-mail address.

Please follow the procedures below to issue a temporary password:

  1. Go to the Login page from the CiNii Articles page and click "Forgot your password?".
  2. Enter your user ID and the registered e-mail address.
  3. Click "Issue a temporary password".

A temporary password will be sent to your registered e-mail address. Please note that the password is only valid for 24 hours.

CiNii can be used as soon as the registration is completed.
Upon completing registration you will receive a confirmation e-mail from the National Informatics Institute. If you do not receive an e-mail it is likely that registration is not complete. If so, please send an e-mail to user-request@nii.ac.jp from your registered e-mail address, stating your name.
* However, concerning the option setting (ELS academic society participation application), it may take some time for NII confirmation.

Please see User Categories for an explanation of the differences between Individual ID and Site License Individual ID.
If the institution you are affiliated with utilizes the institutional fixed-price service, a Site License Individual ID is preferable for the following reasons:

  • No annual registration fees
  • Free access to the content available under the fixed-price contract

Please note that the Site License Individual ID is allocated automatically by the system (example: SP00000001), and is only valid for that fiscal year.
IDs can be renewed. Please renew through the institution for a fixed-price contract after April 1st of the new fiscal year.

ID can be applied for by a librarian who searches and obtains content on behalf of a user in the library. If a librarian belongs to an "institution with a fixed-price contracts", a "Site License Individual ID" should be applied for. Those who belong to other institutions should apply for an "Individual ID".

(1) When applying for a "Site License Individual ID" :
Please enter your name or your supervisor’s name in the "Name" field, and your library's name in the "Faculty/Department" field.

(2) When applying for an "Individual ID" :
Please enter your name in the "Name" field, then your library's name in the "Faculty/Department" field.

* Note: When a librarian provides users with CiNii content, it should be done in accordance with Terms of Use.

No. if there is no full text on CiNii, you can not obtain it even you have ID. If you would like to obtain its full text, please see How can I obtain the full text of paper which is not on CiNii?
We recommend you to search and check if your necessary article is on CiNii before registration.

It is necessary to apply for a CiNii Individual ID or Site License Individual ID.
From the CiNii Articles page click "Sign Up" and follow the application procedure.

Open Access full text can be used without registration; however, even if the full text is paid content, it can be purchased via the Pay Per View service. Usage fees for such purchases are higher than those for registered users. If you intend to use large amounts of paid full text content, it is more economical to obtain an Individual ID. IClick "Use PPV" in the ID and password request window.

Some features on CiNii can be used free of charge and without registration.

The following services are available free of charge in CiNii Articles (basic service):

  • Article search
  • Abridged article information display
  • Article detailed information display (some journals' abstracts and works cited information may not be accessed)
  • Support for obtaining full text documents (links to periodical holding information, etc.)
  • Viewing Open Access articles

Open Access full text can be used without registration; however, even if the full text is paid content, it can be purchased via the Pay Per View service.
Usage fees for such purchases are higher than those for registered users. If you intend to use large amounts of paid full text content, it is more economical to obtain an Individual ID.

If you are affiliated with an institution that has the institutional fixed-price service, you are able to use without registration, the following in addition to the basic service:

  • Article detailed information display (abstracts, works cited, periodicals holding information, etc.)
  • Links to Webcat Plus that provides periodicals holding information
  • Open Access content and content authorized under the fixed-price service

If you have an Individual ID or Site License Individual ID, you are able to use following service in addition to the basic service:

  • Article detailed information display (abstracts, works cited, periodicals holding information, etc.)
  • Links to Webcat Plus that provides periodicals holding information
  • Use of all paid contents economic price.
    *Note: there are some data that only bibliography available.

【User with ID】

If network issues result in download failure, the full text document can be accessed again by following the procedure below:

  • Log into CiNii Articles, click "Setting" and then select "Usage Record".
  • The titles of NII-ELS academic papers for which you accessed the full text document in the last 24 hours are clickable. Clicking allows access to the full text of the paper(s) again.

* An additional charge is made if papers are viewed from anywhere other than the "Usage Record".
* If a price is displayed in the Usage Record, a charge has been made for viewing the content.

If you have followed the above procedures and are still unable to access contents, please send an inquiry to CiNii at ciniiadm@nii.ac.jp within 7 days of attempting access, including the following information:
(1) User ID
(2) Name
(3) The title of the paper you attempted to access
(4) The operating system browser, and Adobe Acrobat Reader version you were using.


【PPV users】

Upon confirming System Requirments, try again. And if you are still unable to access contents, please send an inquiry to CiNii at ciniiadm@nii.ac.jp within 7 days of attempting access, including the following information:
(1) Date of use
(2) The title of the paper you attempted to access
(3) Reception number
(4) The operating system browser, and Adobe Acrobat Reader version you were using.

CiNii does not provide the full text of papers If there are no "CiNii PDF" or "CiNii Fulltext Link" icons in search results or detailed information pages.
Since NII does not offer any photocopy or delivery services, users should try the following methods:

(1) If you are affiliated with a university, etc.:

Please consult a librarian at your university's library.
Libraries usually have ILL (Inter-Library Loan) service.

(2) If you are not affiliated with any institutions:     

  1. In the case that the search result displays "Databases: NDL":
    There is a [NDL-OPAC] link button on the Article details page. If you are registered as a user of National Diet Library (NDL), you can request for the photo duplication from its linked page. Please ask about the details and how to become a member to NDL directly.

  2. When "CiNii books" icon appears on the search result page:
    CiNii Books leads to the detailed information of the libraries that hold the journal in question.
    Please click "CiNii books" icon to view the journal information.
    You can see the list of university libraries in "university library holdings" on the middle of a screen.
    Clicking a library name enables you to check details about use of the library. Also, clicking on the "OPAC" button next to a library name will take you to OPAC of the library.

    *Please note that to find the journal you need the following:

    ○Please confirm on Webcat Plus that the library has the volume and issue you need.

    ○Please contact the library by phone or email before visiting.
    In some cases the journal may not be available or the library may require prior notice before a visit.

Yes. 2,160 yen is for registration annual fee. If you would like to download paid contents, you will be charged by per article.

*Individual ID will terminate on early March 2017. For details, refer to [CiNii Individual ID] Future plans for change of CiNii service.

Charges vary according to the academic society or journal. Check the Journal Title (ALL) of CiNii Journal with full text Directory for more information.

Also, you can check the cost from the search details display page. Click [Journal Detail] next to the journal title, then check the provision conditions.
Or clicking PDF icon will show you its price validation window if you already logged in CiNii.

Internal system procedure operates every month. The shop name will appear as "CiNii (NII scholarly and Academic Information Navigator)" on your invoice.
Please note that the transaction date will be printed about 1 month after the original transaction date due to internal system procedure.

No, we cannot. Bills are handled only through the credit card registered to the user ID. Still, you may use the service even without registering a user ID.

To see the breakdown, Log in to CiNii and select "Usage Record" under "Setting". You can see how much each article cost from the "Content Usage Log".

No, you may only register an ID and using PPV with a credit card. But we don't accept Debit card. Still, you may use the service even without registering a user ID.

A user can change his or her own postal address, name, phone number, email address etc. by logging into CiNii and changing the data on the "Change user data" dialog box under "Setting" on the CiNii front page.

Log into CiNii and click "Setting", and then go to "Usage record".
The following information can be confirmed under "Usage record".

  • Fees charged for the past 12 months (monthly)
  • Breakdown of content (titles of papers and prices)

The titles of NII-ELS papers for which you have accessed the full text document in the last 24 hours are clickable. Clicking enables access to the full text document again. If download fails due to network issues, the full text document can be accessed again from this menu.

Log into CiNii and make the change from "Change credit card information" under "Setting". But we don't accept Debit card.

Yes. Please Log into CiNii and set a usage limit from "Set annual usage limit for metered content" under "Setting".

You may renew via the internet. A notification e-mail will be sent to your registered e-mail address one month prior to the expiration of your ID.
If you wish to use CiNii for the next year, please log in CiNii and go to "Setting". There you will find the button for renewal.

*Note: The time period for renewal is only three months -- from one month before the expiration date to two months after the expiration date of your ID.

*Individual ID will terminate on early March 2017. For details, refer to [CiNii Individual ID] Future plans for change of CiNii service.

CiNii will terminate Site License Individual ID on March 2017.
Therefore the continuation procedure is not necessary.

Log into CiNii and apply for termination from "Usage Termination Application" under "Setting". Please understand that no refunds can be made, including annual registration fees that have been charged after your first login.

There are two ways of applying.

*Payment must be made in Japanese Yen, wire transferred to our Mizuho Bank account in Japan.

Applications can be made on the internet.

Institutional Fixed-Price Service:

A certain amount of time is required for system registration and connection testing. Please ensure your Application Form arrives at NII no later than the 20th of the month before the month you wish to start the service. If this is delayed, please contact user-request@nii.ac.jp

(2) Contract through an agent

Payment can be made in currencies other than Japanese Yen. Applications can be mailed to the following agents:
- Kinokuniya Company, Ltd.
- Japan Publications Trading Co., Ltd.
- Okura Info Service Co., Ltd.

No, graduate students are not included in the "Number of full-time teaching staff/researchers".

From the e-mail address registered as the administrator, send a change request to user-request@nii.ac.jp, including the name of your institution.
Please note that we cannot accept requests from anyone other than the registered administrator. Should the administrator change, please see How can we change the registered information for our Fixed-Price Contract? for more information.

(1) Login into the Administrator login Page with the administrator ID.
(2) Choose "Change institution data"
(3) View of "Change institution data"
Note that "Category", "Name", "Number of Full-Time Teaching Staff/Researchers" and "IP Address" cannot be edited here.
To change those information, the administrator should contact us [user-request@nii.ac.jp] directly from the registered e-mail address.

*The administrator ID is not the same as the CiNii Individual ID.
*The administrator ID was sent to the administrator by postal mail when the fixed-price contract was received.
*If you forget your administrator ID or password, email us [user-request@nii.ac.jp] from the registered email address.

The contract may be renewed on the internet at the end of the Japanese fiscal year (February-March).

Institutional Fixed-price Service renewal procedures

Please note that service for the next fiscal year will be automatically terminated unless you renew the contract.

The contract may be terminated on the internet.
Please understand that no refunds can be made for fixed-price fees paid before termination of service.

(1) Please login into the Administrator login page with the administrator ID.
(2) Please choose "Usage inquiry" from the menu

You may confirm the total number of accesses up to the previous day.。
The content of each item is as follows.

  • CiNii Search
    The total amount of:
    • -The number of times that users clicked "Search".
    • -The number of times that users accessed the additional pages of search results by clicking "Next", "Prev", etc.
    • -The number of times that users clicked "Author" or "Keywords" on the details display page.
    • -The number of times that users clicked "keyword" on the right corner of the display.
  • CiNii detailed display
    The total amount of:
    • -The number of times that users accessed "Detailed Information" from the "Search Results".
    • -The number of times that users clicked "English" or "Japanese".
    • -The number of the times that users clicked the "References" or "Cited by" on the CiNii details display page.
    • -The number of the times that users clicked the "title" or "author" of the list of "References" or "Cited by" on the CiNii details page.
    • -The number of times that users clicked "Details", "Works Cited" or "Citing Works" on the CiNii details display page.
  • ELS Institutional Fixed-Price usage license contents display
    • -The number of times that users accessed full text documents with fixed-price contracts.
      Not including the number of times that the users accessed the Open Access contents and the paid contents.
  • Number of Site License Individual IDs
    • -New registration : The number of Site License Individual IDs that have been registered.
    • -Termination : The number of Site License Individual IDs that have been terminated or have not been renewed.

*The administrator ID is not the same as the CiNii Individual ID.
*The administrator ID was sent to the administrator by postal mail when the fixed-price contract was received.
*If you forget your administrator ID or password, email us [user-request@nii.ac.jp] from the registered email address.
*Only the use statistics of CiNii Articles can be checked at present.(November, 2011)

CiNii full text content cannot be accessed through ILL. This is covered by Academic Content Service Usage Regulations of Service Article 5 (Copyright of academic information, etc.) 2 (ii) -- "Irrespective of whether the Service is used on a paid or free basis and irrespective of the form at of media recording, mate rial duplicated on the basis of the proviso in the preceding item (i) must not be provided, distributed, loaned, or transferred to other persons or be transmitted publicly (including being left in a state in which it is capable of automatic public transmission)."

Walk-in users, in public libraries for example, can use CiNii within an institution with a fixed-price contract. However, it is not possible for such a user to obtain a Site License Individual ID.

Yes, a librarian can perform searches on behalf of a user at a library counter as part of the library’s reference services.
Also, the librarian may provide the user with access to CiNii full text contents. In that case, the library may collect a surcharge from the user.

*Note: When a librarian provides users with CiNii content, it should be done in accordance with the regulations.

NII has started to provide statistics in accordance with COUNTER guidelines since April 2006.

The Institution which has contract of CiNii Institutional Fixed Price Service can set the Shibboleth authentication. Please see below how to setting.
(Now CiNii is accepting only users of GakuNin (Japan) and UK Federation. Please ask service desk if you want to use institutional login from other federations.)

(1) Log into Administrator login
(2) Click "Change Institution Data"
(3) Select "Yes" at the [Shibboleth authentication] section
(4) E-mail confirming approval setting is sent
(5) Setting has been completed

If "jao", "jaou", "o" and "ou" field of Shibboleth Authentication IdP is different from the institution's name registered for Institutional Fixed-Price Service, adding alias settings linkage to your Shibboleth authentication is necessarily. Please continue the procedure below.

(1) Log into Administrator login
(2) Click "Additional setting of Shibboleth"
(3) Enter the jao, jaou etc. at the additional setting column. Then click "Next" and "OK".
(4) Changes completed.

The Institutional Login is the system that allows authorization between an university and providers so the members of the university can use several provider services with single sign-on. The ID should be supplied by the university.
In Japan, "GakuNin" is the federation for universities (academic institutions) and providers.
It constructs a framework of the Shibboleth authentication.
GakuNin accept an entry from universities, please see [GakuNin] page for more details. From abroad, users of UK Federation also can use Institutional Login.

Of the information provided by CiNii, bibliographic information held by NII-ELS can be imported by BibTex and Endnote. Data other than NII-ELS is not compatible with bibliographic management software.

Yes. CiNii is able to be linked to other websites and systems using OpenURL as follows:

(1) Institutions with fixed-price contracts are able to set links between their OPAC, systems such as link resolvers (a system that links article information in a database to library OPACs or full text resources) and CiNii Articles by using OpenURL.
CiNii is compatible with OpenURL 1.0 and 0.1.
*Note: Only the administrators of the institutions with fixed-price contracts are able to set such links.

(2) Describing a link in the OpenURL format enables links between each record on CiNii to link resolvers, etc.

Users can set links between CiNii and their OPACs by using ISSN.

*This function is for only for institutions with fixed-price contracts. Administrators can set it from the settings page for institutions.

Libraries connected to the online cataloging system (NACSIS-CAT) are able to set and display a link to their OPACs on CiNii Books by adding the data to information on connected library of NACSIS-CAT database, if their OPAC can receive NCID as a parameter.
